Scientists at the Royal Society revealed that 64% of biodiversity loss is caused by land-use changes for food production, overexploitation for food, medicine, and timber, as well as climate change. In addition, the loss of natural habitats is also driven by urban expansion, water use (where dams and irrigation reduce water flow), and pollution from plastic waste with long-term impacts. These activities increasingly use natural habitats, converting them into agricultural lands, mining areas, industrial infrastructure, and urban zones.
If we continue to live this way, we will need 1.6 times Earth’s resources, and ecosystems will not be able to keep up (United Nations Environment Programme [UNEP]). So, do we still want to turn a blind eye and ignore these impacts?
Quoting from the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (the Biodiversity Plan): “An ambitious plan to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity requires implementation from all parts of society.” Thus, through the “Be Part of The Plan” campaign on the 2024 International Day for Biodiversity, a simple guide was created for citizens and civil society to become part of the change.
Some simple steps to protect and restore biodiversity that we can take include:
Use healthy or locally sourced food for daily consumption. Eating meat and fish in moderation (not excessively) can reduce pressure on natural resources. It is also strongly recommended to consume fruits and vegetables in season.
Reduce waste by shopping wisely. Compost food scraps. Repair, reuse, and recycle everything from household items to clothing.
Learn how the use of chemicals, such as detergents, pesticides, and cosmetics—can impact biodiversity, and use this knowledge to choose eco-friendly alternatives.
In addition, to prosper with nature, we can:
Choose fresh products from local markets and support bio or environmentally friendly products.
Support and promote ecotourism. Your next travel plan doesn’t have to leave a big carbon footprint, you can visit nearby destinations. Also, help explain the value of biodiversity to those around you. There’s still a lot of joy to be had while avoiding activities that disturb fauna and flora.
So, are you ready to start the change?
Because we cannot change anything unless we start with ourselves.
