Bogor – Capacity Building Training was held from February 24–27, 2025, at Hotel Onih Bogor.
This advanced training was designed for participants who previously attended the first phase of SMART Patrol training in July 2024, where they were introduced to the basics of using the SMART application. The activity aims to enhance the capacity of CFES field partners in utilizing SMART as an evidence-based monitoring tool.

The training was officially opened by Eka Muliawati Putri, Acting Chairperson of the CFES Board of Management. In her speech, Eka stated, "This is the second time CFES has organized a special training for partners and staff related to SMART Patrol to support program development. Through this advanced-level training, participants are expected to manage data based on models, queries, and report generation more optimally."

The four-day training was led by trainer Lili Sadikin, who also taught the first phase, and assisted by co-trainer Oktafa Rini Puspita. The training materials focused on using SMART Desktop, including adding and configuring data models on mobile devices and creating comprehensive patrol report templates.

According to Sri Wahyuni, CFES representative during the orientation session, participants are expected to gain deep understanding in managing and analyzing data, as well as compiling reports that effectively support evidence-based community forest management policy decisions.

The main objectives of the training include:

  • Adding and managing data models within the SMART Desktop application to support more efficient patrol management.
  • Configuring models on mobile devices to ensure data collected is integrated with the desktop system.
  • Designing systematic patrol report templates in line with SMART reporting standards.

On the first day, the agenda covered an introduction to SMART Desktop and the data model structure, including adding, managing, and hands-on practice with data models. The session began with a pre-test to assess participants’ knowledge of SMART Desktop, data models, queries, and reports, followed by an introduction to configurable models and practical exercises.

Lili Sadikin explained, “A data model is the observational data structure within SMART. This model is designed flexibly to allow various ways of structuring data. The quality of the data structure significantly determines the final output, and the configurable model is a restructuring of the data model used to create the display on the mobile application.”

The second day focused on queries and summaries required for report generation. The trainer elaborated, “A query is generally a question or request for information. In information technology, especially databases, a query is a command to retrieve and manipulate data.”

The third day introduced the report feature and involved creating report templates as comprehensive practice using SMART Desktop, while the final day concluded with material review and a post-test evaluation.

The advanced SMART Patrol training is expected to enhance participants’ capacity in data management and report writing, enabling more effective contributions to community-based forest management and integrated area monitoring systems.
